Christmas Caroling

Start a new Family Tradition Christmas Caroling

Almost all the well-known carols were not sung in church until the second half of the 19th century.[citation needed] Hymns Ancient and Modern 1861–1874 included several carols. Isaac Watts, the “father of English hymnody”, composed “Joy to the World” which has become a popular Christmas carol even though it is widely believed that Watts did not write it to be sung only at Christmas.

Charles Wesley wrote texts for at least three Christmas carols, of which the best known was originally entitled “Hark! How All the Welkin Rings”, later edited to “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing“.[6] A tune from a cantata written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840 was adapted by William H. Cummings to fit Wesley’s words. This combination first appeared in “Hymns Ancient and Modern” in 1861.[citation needed]

Silent Night” comes from Austria. The carol was first performed in the Nikolaus-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in OberndorfAustria on December 24, 1818. Mohr had composed the words much earlier, in 1816, but on Christmas Eve brought them to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for the church service.[7] The first English translation was in 1871 where it was published in a Methodist hymnal.

Christmas Eve is the evening or entire day before Christmas Day, the widely celebrated annual holiday. It occurs on December 24 in the Western Christian Church,[4] and is considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christendom and the Western world, where it is widely observed as a full or partial holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day.

One reason celebrations occur on Christmas Eve is that the traditional Christian liturgical day starts at sunset,[5] an inheritance from Jewish tradition.[6]This practice is based on the story of Creation in the Book of Genesis: “And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.”[7] This structure for the liturgical day is followed for all feast days throughout the year in the Eastern rite[8] and is retained for Christmas (as well as for Sundays and other major festivals) in the West, where the liturgical day ordinarily begins at midnight.[9] Many churches still ring their church bells and hold prayers in the evening before holidays; for example, the Nordic Lutheran churches.[10] In some languages, such as the Scandinavian, Christmas Eve is simply referred to as “Christmas Evening”.

Since Christian tradition holds that Jesus was born at night (based in Luke 2:6-8), Midnight Mass is celebrated on Christmas Eve, traditionally at midnight, in commemoration of his birth.[11] The idea of Jesus being born at night is reflected in the fact that Christmas Eve is referred to as “Heilige Nacht” (“Holy Night”) in German, “Nochebuena” (“the Good Night”) in Spanish and similarly in other expressions of Christmas spirituality, such as the song “Silent Night, Holy Night”.
